(Bloomberg Law) — It’s amazing what you can do with a law degree.

History is replete with stealth lawyers — people who graduated from law school or even practiced law before achieving success in other walks of life.

Russia’s Vladimir Lenin and India’s Mahatma Gandhi were both practicing lawyers before leading their very different revolutions.

The painter Henri Matisse was a court administrator before becoming a founder of modern art.

The writer Studs Terkel, the actor Paul Robeson and the comedian Greg Giraldo all graduated from law school. So did Ozzie Nelson of TV’s Ozzie and Harriet and the poet Wallace Stevens.

Otto Preminger graduated from University of Vienna Law School before directing the great courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder. Sports broadcasting legend Howard Cosell was a labor lawyer before finding fame on Monday Night Football.

Even Francis Scott Key, author of The Star-Spangled Banner, was first a lawyer.
